Oilfield Art Gallery - Stock & Original Photos

This is a selection of my most popular Oilfield Images for Fine Art. Each image is available in both fine art paper prints which can be framed out as well as fine art canvas gallery wraps. We now have a contemporary in-house framing option for canvas prints which can help you avoid the high cost of custom framing especially if you live in the Permian Basin. Sizes range from 12x18” to 40x60” or 40”x80”

Illusionary Warmth 2:1 Panorama (2017)

Illusionary Warmth was photographed during the dead of Winter January 2018 in the sand hills of Western Lea County New Mexico. The image features Frontier rig 26 drilling a directional well for XTO Energy. At first glance the sunrise imparts warmth. In reality the temperature was 13 degrees. Not bad for the Bakken or Boulder Wyoming. Definitely cool for the far Northern Delaware Basin. Look closely and you can see a jackrabbit looking over his shoulder. He stood there for 10 minutes one eyed locked on me hoping not to move. The image is a 2:1 high resolution panorama composited from 63 images made over three minutes time. The lens used was the sharpest yet made by the hand of man. Seven light levels were captured within the 63 images allowing all parts of the image to be recorded in perfect detail.

A Corroboration of Elements (2017)

A Corroboration of Elements was photographed in Western Lea County New Mexico in the Spring of 2017.

The 3:1 panorama consists  of 98 separate images rendering 7 levels of light. The image was captured right after the passage of an early Spring severe thunderstorm. The characteristic lime green can be seen in the new Spring leaves of the Mesquite ground cover wet from 2 inches of rain. 2017 turned out to be a stormy Summer for the Permian Basin and especially the Western Delaware Basin. The process of combining 98 high resolution images together to make the panorama creates an image that is 20 times the resolution of conventional commercial photography. The result is a level of detail that very few people have seen in a photograph.   Fine art oil & gas photography by Robert D. Flaherty. Photo © copyright by Robert D. Flaherty.

Remnant At Square Lake (2018)

Remnant At Square Lake  was photographed in the Permian Basin near the sand hills of Square Lake in Northwestern Lea County New Mexico. The location is an old stripper well originally drilled around 1980.  The Pump Jack was photographed at a close upward angle using a tilt shift or perspective control lens.  The use of this lens renders perfect focus thought the image. The lens also provides a strong three dimensional feel when used in this way.

The Golden Moment (2018)

The Golden Moment features Frontier Rig 26 drilling a deep directional well in the Northern Delaware Basin. Wether on fine art paper or fine art canvas,  The image looks best spot lit with 4000K led lighting.  The image was taken at sunset in Western Lea County New Mexico during the dry Winter of 2018. The clouds above the rig were caused by high winds aloft passing over the Guadalupe Mountains of Western Texas and New Mexico.  This cloud type is often referred to as a lens cloud. The image is a non HDR composite of 16 levels of light ranging from white to total black. This allows the sun to be held back completely to its original shape while rendering all details in the foreground and drilling rig down to the finest details. Conventional photography would only allow the drilling rig and foreground to be displayed as a black silhouette.  The image is an 85mm capture made with the Zeiss Otus 85mm 1.4.  The lens has the distinction of being the highest performing lens ever made. The type of lens I choose and the resolution I photograph in are a large part of the very fine detail that my work is known for.

Holding On To Summer (2017)

Holding On To Summer features an SWD photographed against a beautiful turbulent sunset in the central Delaware Basin of Western Texas. My favorite time of year to photograph the Delaware is during the rainy season from June through October. With the right light an ordinary oilfield asset such as this one can be turned into a work of art. This image is actually a composite of 63 high resolution images into one panorama that is up to 16 times the resolution of traditional professional photography. The bump in resolution and detail allows the image to be used as a fine art wall mural as large as 20x40 feet.  The image can also be reproduced as a fine art print with a sense of depth and detail that few people will ever see. Fine art prints on canvas or smooth water color paper are available from 12x24" to 40x80".  Going into 2018 I will be photographing  water infrastructure and Midstream oil & gas assets throughout the Delaware Basin. Commissioned projects are available.

The End Of Tranquility (2017)

The End Of Tranquility was shot during the 2017 Summer Monsoon in the Western Delaware Basin near Orla Texas. The image was made using three high resolution cameras calibrated together and aimed each at a third of the location.  The three images are then composited together to make one very high resolution image. The use of three cameras is necessary when photographing lightning due to its unpredictable and transitory nature.  The end result is the highest quality image possible.  This is especially important when producing very large scale fine art photography such as a fine art mural.  The resolution in this print would support a mural up to 16 feet wide. The boost in resolution also makes for very finely detailed fine art prints on canvas or water color paper.

Summer Sky (2013)

The wide open high grassland of Chavez County New Mexico is the setting for "Summer Sky".  Each year the summer monsoon season brings continuous thunderstorm activity from July through September to the mile high prairie of East Central New Mexico.  2014 has brought over twenty inches of rain in less than six weeks and helped to alleviate a four year drought.  The area is dominated by shallow and medium depth gas and oil production established in the boom of the early 80's.  Today only a hand full of shallow vertical wells have been drilled here over the past few years. Summer Sky Panorama In Sepia

The wide open high grassland of Chavez County New Mexico is the setting for "Summer Sky Panorama In Sepia". The End Of Tranquility In Sepia

The End Of Tranquility In Sepia was shot during the 2017 Summer Monsoon in the Western Delaware Basin near Orla Texas.

Prelude To Darkness

Prelude To Darkness is set in the rolling hills of the Thunder Basin National Grassland in Northeastern Wyoming. Early fall means cool crisp evenings with 200 mile visibility. Perfect weather for high resolution photography.  An alpine wind break was used here to shelter the camera from a 15 mile per hour wind thus insuring absolute image sharpness. The image consists of 3 vertical 50 megapixel exposures combined to make one 120 megapixel image. The Zeiss Otus 85mm 1.2 was used to capture the image. The Zeiss 85mm Otus is currently the worlds sharpest 85mm lens.  Prelude To Darkness is a featured print for the month of October in my studio gallery at Topside overlooking Ruidoso New Mexico. An Unfinished Story

"An Unfinished Story" was originally just a test shot from an infrared modified camera on a new location I was scouting in March of 2014. The image has since become a popular item in my Sepia Collection.  Look for a grand color or sepia panoramic from this location featuring the large thunderstorm complexes that frequently move out of Southern Colorado into the Texas Panhandle over the Summer months.  Most of the locations I choose to photograph are scouted months or years in advance. Particular weather events provide the backdrop I am looking for. Wide open locations like this one where the camera is directed northeast provide an incredible foreground for a thunderstorm complex up to 200 miles away.   The image here was captured utilizing a new prototype 100 inch tripod and panoramic head from Really Right Stuff.  The height above the ground contributes to the view all the way to the horizon miles away.  Oil & Gas Photography for fine art by Robert D. Edge Of Day Sepia

This is the sepia version of "Edge Of Day" an old pump jack photographed in January 2010 on a Concho Federal lease in Eddy County New Mexico. The location was taken out of service in late 2012 but remains one of my most popular images especially in large format. The color image was converted to sepia at the request of a Houston interior designer.   I liked it so much that decided to add it to the Sepia Collection. Photo © copyright by Robert D. Flaherty.
